Abstract

This paper analyzes certain aspects of the social policy deployed by the contending sides in the Spanish Civil War to deal with an issue that touched the sensibilities of a society tortured by the conflict. Those orphaned by the death of their military parents soon became a propaganda tool that the authorities on both sides did not hesitate to use. The solutions implemented by both sides to alleviate their misfortune had the corresponding legal backing, which was inserted in the official newspapers published simultaneously in both Spains: the Gaceta de la República and the Boletín Oficial del Estado in the National zone. From the analysis of both legal bodies, it can be deduced that there were differences in mentality when considering the support that these orphaned minors deserved, but the harshest reality is that within each zone, Republican or National, only the children of their own fallen could be protected.
