Abstract

The archaeological excavations carried out between 2000 and 2005 in the Forum of Segobriga (Cabeza de Griego, Saelices, Cuenca) have provided more than 10.000 fragments of "marmora" used in its architectural decoration. The were foreign marbles, but mainly, the colour limestone from the Spanish quarries: "broccatello" from Dertosa, "Espejón" from Clunia and "Buixcarró" stone from Saetabis. On the other hand, the geologic processes of the zone of Almadén define diverse types of marbles, some of which were identificed in Segobriga, by means of the thin section observation using the polarizing microscope. The identifications have been carried out by comparision with the reference collection in the LEMLA(UAB). For the first time ¡, we attest the use of white marble from Almadén de la Plata (Sevilla) abroad the Baetica province.
