Abstract

Interwar Europe experienced an unprecedented wave of brutalisation and paramilitarisation within politics as important social and political sectors opted for violence to attain their goals. This article analyses this process, highlighting the role played by young people in virtually all European countries. These developments would infuence the unfolding of one of the darkest periods in contemporary European history, despite the warnings of important intellectuals, which also shows us that democracy is a fragile historical construct that can never be considered safe from its enemies.
