Abstract

The definition of strategic autonomy applied to the EU has its origins in the field of security and defense, although a clear and fully accepted definition has not been achieved. It involves various types of factors, which represent a set of opposite aspects that do not give rise to a univocal perspective on the subject. Instead of the very different positions of the EU countries, some relevant factors have triggered the development of such a concept: the supply chain shortcomings that have become obvious since the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the foreseeable impacts within the economic-industrial sphere. The impact that strategic autonomy, as defined here, may have on the European defense industrial and technological base and that of the different member countries, is still unknown, although some positions and results can be advanced.
