Neurodegenerative diseases, which have a strong connection with aging, are becoming one of the most important challenges for national health services, as societies are getting older. We are still far from fully understanding the details of the way in which central nervous system works and furthermore neurodegenerative diseases have a complex multifactorial origin, and so their diagnosis often comes too late to reverse the pathological process. Available drugs are only useful to relieve symptoms, since they do not target the real origin of the neurodegeneration. In this context, it is necessary to apply the current knowledge about the onset of neurodegeneration to the design of drugs directed to emerging targets, and to consider new therapeutic strategies able to better deal with this kind of diseases, such as the use of multitarget directed ligands...
