Abstract

The doctoral thesis: Typology of Private Collecting of Contemporary Art in Spain1977-2017 “Profiles of collectors”, begun as a personal desire to search into this matterand to consider the need to generate a documentary base for future researches and to make visible the patronage work carried out by collectors, who safeguard a heritage and generate a social good.The objective of this research has been to build a cartography of the private collecting of contemporary art in Spain in the last forty years, a study that offers answers to the following questions: who collects, how is it collected, when it begins, why is it collected, what objectives and future have these collections and what content and artistic discourse are in them. The main basis of the work has been to approach to the source, the collector and take a testimony with the person who build the collection. I chose this work method because itis a privilege to receive, in first person, the process of building a collection and his artistic background. Previously, we estimate the number of collections, based on the knowledge acquired in my profession and on the invaluable advice of Francisco Calvo Serraller, the director of this doctoral thesis until his death.
