Abstract

This Thesis, "The westernmost limits of the Achaemenid Empire. The northernAegean during the period of Persian rule" examines the northern Aegean between the end of the 6th c. BC and the first decades of the 5th c. BC, that is to say, during the time of the Persian rule of the region. The Thesis is divided into several parts: a first part of introduction, where we present the justification and methodology of this study; four separate chapters (1-4) of content, the first dealing with historiography and the territory of the northern Aegean (Thrace and Macedonia); the second about the Persian campaigns of Darius and Xerxes; a third, about the Persian administration and organization in the region and a fourth, dedicated to the interpretation of the material culture associated with the Persians in Europe.
