Abstract

I analyze some key aspects of the medical model of childbirth, focusing especially on the assumptions it seems to harbor about the mind-body relationship. First, I examine views of the medical model as an ontological dualist model. Contrary to the usual criticisms of this dualism, which argue that it has led to treating the birthing body as a machine I argue that the problem lies not in the dualism itself, but in the fact that the mind-body interaction is obviated: it is the birthing persons themselves who are treated as machines. Secondly, I analyze the centrality of the notion of risk in the medical model of childbirth and argue that it again reveals a split between the mental and the bodily. I also defend a constructionist conception of risk, since risk is not independent of medical discourses and practices, but rather these factors have a causal impact on it. Thirdly and finally, I briefly address the discrediting of the testimonies of birthing people, pointing again to the split between the body and the mind.
