Abstract
Public and private transport networks have proved to be a key factor in urban growth, affecting both the morphology and the development of cities and towns. This paper aims to present a collaborative research project, linked to three different research groups from Brazil and Spain. The study is focused on the implementation and development of urban transport systems, throughout the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century, within the cities of Bilbao, Madrid (Spain) and Natal (Brazil), by adopting a historical perspective. First of all, the features and peculiarities of each one of the three cities are displayed. Likewise, the differences related to scale, time and rhythm are taken into account. Finally, some of the elements which are going to serve as material for future research are offered; For instance, the question of how railways became a factor hampering urban growth from the thirties onwards.
