Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the Spanish missionary Diego de Pantoja and rescuing this figure from oblivion. As the title refers, it delves into an experience of multidisciplinary dialogue in the framework of the Ming dynasty. Presenting this multidisciplinarity in Chinese context is the goal and guiding principle of the study. With the support of primary sources and after the organization and synthesis of the available documentation, the polyhedral profile of the Valdemoreño savant is reconstructed from four perspectives: the musician, the scientist, the theologian and the missionary. A character forgotten by research in Western circles, Pantoja is today an exponent of religious and intercultural dialogue. His versatile characteristics made him a significant figure in Beijing society in the early seventeenth century.
