Abstract

The protection of the horse foot has been a relevant matter for different civilisationsalong human history. The origin of the horse shoe is still not fully clarified. There are differenttheories on this subject, different origins are proposed: China, Central Asia, Celticgroups…What seems to be clear is that the horse shoe was introduced in Europe by theBarbarian invasions as there were only citations of hippopodos and hipposandals as horse footprotections in the bibliography during the Greco-Roman period. In Spain it is not determinedwhether its use resulted from the Barbarian or Arab invasions.
