Abstract

The level of knowledge, attitudes and preventive periodontal practices of Spanish stomatologists and odontologists is unknown. In the study, a questionnaire was sent to a representative sample in order to assess some aspects of this issue. Results showed that the dentists who answered performed periodontal probing infrequently (only 7% did it routine), 24.6% did not trust the efficacy of periodontal therapy and 83% dedicated less than 25% of their total clinic time to Periodontics. An important element related with a higher degree of periodontal awareness was found to be the attendance to continuing education courses. It was less related with years of professional practice, number of hours dedicated to practice or the environment where the practice is established. The periodontal training of the professionals in Stomatology and Ondontoly is one issue that should be improved in the future.
