Resumen
This systematic review included 22 studies published between 2017 and 2022, with the aim of identifying the mental health problems that adult women who engage in prostitution have, their prevalence and examining associations between psychopathology and other factors. The results showed different psychopathological constructs associated with prostitution (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychological distress, alcohol and other drug use, and suicidal ideation and attempt). A higher prevalence of all these factors was found in the samples of women who engage in prostitution than in the general population. Additionally, several studies found an association between some factors (poverty, gender identity, violence, HIV, and high-risk sexual behavior) and mental health problems in adult women who engage in prostitution.
