Abstract

Thirty-six adult periodontitis patients were select and the presence of P. gingivalis, P. infermedia and A actinomycetemcomitans in periodontal pockets was evaluated, trying to establish correlations between their presence and the clinical improvements after scaling and root planing. Clinical measurements were taken at baseline examination (plaque index, bleeding on probing, probing depth) as well as microbiological samples (processed by cultures). About five months after the treatment, clinical measurements were taken again. The clinical outcome was satisfactory (regarding the reduction in probing depth), with significant improvements in the evaluated parameters, and we didn't find significant differences between the responses of the groups divided according to initial microbiological paraments. The predictability of the selected microbiological factor wasn't strong enough for clinical use. 92% of the patients harboured, at least, one of the studied bacterial species, and P. gingivalis and/or A. actinomycentecomitans were isolated in 46%. The number of samples per patient seemed to be an important factor to evaluate the prevalence in periodontal patients for different bacterial species.
