Resumo

The presence of furcation involvement makes worse the prognosis of molars in the patient with periodontal disease. Guide tissue regeneration (GTR) gives the possibility to recover the attachment loss in the furcation. In this work, 16 studies which include 403 mandibular class II furcations treated by means of GTR are analized. The use of non reasorbable and bioabsorbable devices and its combination with other regenerative procedures is discussed. GTR can be considered as a predictable treatment of degree II furcation involved mandibular molars, and the attachment gain can be maintained if an exhaustive plaque control is performed. Although there are several studies evaluating GTR in furcations, the great amount of barrier types, as well as the possibility of combining them with other regenerative procedures, has obstructed us to determinate through a meta analysis, which technique and type of membrane provide better clinical results in the treatment of furcation involvements. Additional studies are needed to determinate the ideal material and structure of the barrier and to confirm the advantages of bioabsorbable materials and the possibility to increase furcation filling combining the use of barriers and osseous grafts.
