Abstract

Growth factors are a family of peptidic signal molecules that can modification the cellular actions. They are involved in the control of cell growth and differentiation. The characterization of the signals has only been possible since the advent of molecular biology. Thus, it has been possible to isolate and produce some of them. Their characterization appealed to all researchers because they started knowing the participation of this factors in different pathologies and the use of growth factors and their antagonist its in different treatment. The odontology research community has an interest in their roles in wound healing and regeneration of periodontal tissues. The purpose of this review is to summarize current information on the structure of the growth factors, their biological effects, their involvement in differences in pathologies and their clinic uses.
