Abstract

The European Welfare Models and Mental Wellbeing in Final Years of Life (EMMY) project was an interdisciplinary and mixed methods comparative study aimed to deepen the concept of mental well-being (MW) and to explore the impact of welfare systems on MW among the oldest old (aged 80 plus) in Finland, Italy, Norway and Spain. Our findings reinforce the dynamic and multidimensional nature state of MW, as well as highlight the significance of psychosocial factors. A systematic review showed some reliable and valid instruments for evaluating MW in older adults, while there was not an instrument that specifically measures MW in the oldest old age group. Results from the comparative policy analysis revealed that those related to universal care measures that prioritize high levels of formal support, gender equality and salary, and a long working life are important for the older population´s MW. A tool for policy impact assessment has also been developed so that stakeholders can identify the impact a particular policy, service, programme or project may have on the MW among the oldest old population
