Abstract
Advances in the knowledge of etiology and progression of periodontal diseases are parallel to those about diagnostic methods, including microbiological tests. The aim of this first section is to describe the development, actual use and future applications of microbiological assays, related to the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Technical classification and description of these methods are discussed in another article.
