Abstract

New data on an early igneous event in the Ossa-Morena Zone during the Lower Cambrian are presented in this paper. Petrological and geochemical data support the implication of continental crust components in the genesis of the magmatic rocks. This igneous event is interpreted as the result of an extensional tectonic process of lower Cambrian age that was accompanied by a strong thermal rise probably connected to an underlying mantle plume or simply to decompression melting triggered by severe thinning of the lithosphere.
