Abstract

A 5-year-old girl was brought to the emergency departmentbecause of respiratory distress of 3 months' evolutionthat had worsened over the previous 3 weeks. Cervicalradiograph and cervical computerized axial tomographyshowed an endolaryngeal mass almost completely occludingthe airway. Urgent laryngoscopy revealed an endolaryngealfleshy mass, which was excised during the procedure.Histological diagnosis was laryngeal papilloma. Although infrequent in children, laryngeal papilloma isthe most common laryngeal tumor in pediatrics. It is currentlynamed juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.The human papilloma virus (HPV) causes thedisease by vertical transmission from a mother with activeor latent vulvar HPV infection.
