Abstract

Female homelessness is a reality rarely addressed that seems to be hidden. This is especially true considering the reality of migrant women, who are affected by a triple invisibility: woman, migrant and homeless. In this sense, this paper analyses the reality of the so-called “hidden homelessness” that affects women of foreign origin. In this sense, this work presented the results obtained in qualitative research carried out through in-depth interviews with 14 migrant women in a situation of “hidden homelessness” living in the municipality of Alhama de Murcia (Region of Murcia, Spain). The results allow us to characterise female migrant homelessness on the basis of two fundamental categories, unsafe housing and inadequate housing. Thus, insalubrity, forced cohabitation, structural defects, excessive housing costs, overcrowded conditions and insecure tenure are defining elements of the “hidden homelessness” affecting women of foreign origin. This confirms that female migrant homelessness is a phenomenon that takes place in different places from those traditionally associated with male homelessness: life on the street and/or in care centres. This leads to the need to conceptualise homelessness in a broad way to consider the traditionally invisible spaces where women are most present. Moreover, the participants discourses suggest that the trajectories leading to female migrant homelessness are marked by residential exclusion, but also by the difficulties of participation in employment and in social protection systems (housing and social benefits).
