Abstract
The results obtained during the geological study of Sierra Boyera, southeast of Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, Córdoba Province, are shown in this paper. The area has been mapped and many outcrops have been studied and sampled. A stratigraphic section has been described in the area where calcareous outcrops are more continuous. The Carboniferous deposits of Sierra Boyera were formed in an inner, storm-dominated marine platform, and in a deeper outer platform where microbial mounds developed. Thick masses of calcareous breccias interpreted as debris flow deposits crop out north-westwards from the Sierra Boyera Section, but no stratigraphical continuity between both areas is observed. The foraminiferal assemblages in these deposits are poor, but enough for dating the rocks. The age of the sediments embraces most of the late Viséan, but the microbial limestones of Sierra Boyera were mostly developed during the foraminiferal chronozone 15 (middle part of the late Viséan).
