Abstract

Online teaching environments require the introduction of tools usually differentfrom those used in traditional face-to-face classrooms. This study aims to analysethe use of a new online discussion forum (Kialo.com), which arranges replies infavour or against to a previously set statement or question, in an online ESL/EFLuniversity course focused on reading and writing.Results obtained from an opinion questionnaire show that students considerKialo as a very useful tool in this environment, to practise and improve Englishreading and writing skills, critical thinking and autonomy. They also felt moremotivated to write and read in English and prefer it to traditional forums.
