Objective: To qualitatively and quantitatively describe the subgingival cultivable microbiota in Albanian subjects, with different periodontal conditions according to the 2018 classification of periodontal diseases, and to compare it with a similar Spanish population. Material and Methods: Consecutive patients, diagnosed as periodontally healthy or with periodontitis in stages I-II or III-IV, were studied clinically and microbiologically by means of microbiological culture, including total anaerobic counts, proportion, and frequency of detection of target species. Outcome variables were analysed by Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, ANOVA and Chi-square tests. Results: Eighty-three (Albania) and 90 (Spain) subjects were included. no statistically significant differences were observed between Albanian and Spanish populations regarding demographic variables or smoking habit. Significntly higher total anaerobic counts in the Albanian population (p=0.022) than in Spain were observed, especially in the peiodontal health/gingivitis group (p=0.001). In Albanian subjects, teh proportions of cultivable microbiota of Fusobacterium nucleatum were significantly lower in both healthy/gingivitis (p=0.022) and stages I-II periodotntitis (p=0.034) groups, when compared with Spanish subjects. Similarly, significantly lower prportions of Prevotella intermedia were found in Albanian subjects in stages III-IV periodonttis (p=0.038)
