Abstract

Currently, the teachers are making efforts to promote a more active education than the traditional mas-ter classes. In them, the student is considered the center of learning, which has repercussions on a be-tter acquisition of the specific skills of the subjects they teach, in this case, subjects around Chemistryfor engineering degrees. During the last academic years, the learning methodology based on inquiryhas been applied. In this case, students have autonomously carried out a series of daily experiencesand have applied some of the concepts that are introduced theoretically in the classroom. The topicsconcerning these experiences are acid-base balance, redox reactions and electrochemistry. The ex-periences performed have been i) the building a battery with vegetables for obtaining electrical energyby using vegetables as electrolyte and screws and coins as anode and as cathode; ii) the use of a redcabbage as an indicator of the pH of the medium and iii) the use of the Fenton process, a redox reac-tion based on the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into oxidizing radicals in the presence of iron,through the use of lentils and hydrogen peroxide for the degradation of a food dye in water.
