Abstract

Since the beginning of laparoscopic surgery for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the late 20th century, this approach has become commonly used as treatment of localized RCC. Historically, the main surgical technique was radical nephrectomy (RN), reserving partial nephrectomy (PN) for patients with single kidney, chronic kidney disease (CKD) or hereditary RCC. Currently, PN is recommended in patients with cT1 renal tumors when it is technically possible, even in patients with a healthy contralateral kidney and normal preoperative renal function. This recommendation is based on retrospective studies, where the oncological outcomes between PN and NR where similar, but with a greater detriment of renal function in patients treated with RN. However, recent retrospective series and one only existing clinical trial, have found no difference in overall survival (OS),despite the greater renal function detriment in NR-treated patients...
