Abstract

Companies often need to create collaboration spaces with various actors in order to carry out innovation projects. At the same time, they must count on effective mechanisms to prevent possible unwanted knowledge leaks that could create barriers to appropriate the benefits of said projects in the commercialization phase. Although recent research findings show that the two existing appropriation mechanisms —i.e., formal or strategic— have a differentiated effect on the decision to collaborate with external partners, most of these studies ignore the importance of context-related factors and focus on companies operating in developed economies. Based on the above, this paper examines the relationship between the type of appropriation mechanism deployed and the decision towards cooperation in the context of emerging economies, specifically in the Colombian manufacturing sector. Findings show that although both types of mechanism positively affect the probability of studied companies to engage in collaboration efforts, the magnitude of the resulting effect varies depending on the type of collaboration required and also when this is limited to the specific R&D objectives of partnering companies. The implications derived from the analysis are of interest both for the understanding of business strategy and innovation policies.
