Abstract

Each year, more than 700,000 suicides occur in the world. It continues to be the main external cause of death in Spain, ahead of traffic accidents. For this reason, the WHO now considers suicide a public health problem. Among the risk factors associated with suicidal behavior are mood disorders, personality disorders, substance abuse, social isolation, and deteriorated physical health. In order to prevent suicidal behavior, it is necessary for clinicians to be trained in detecting these risk factors and for determining the possibility of immediate action by the patient, which is a key criterion for hospitalization. The most effective treatment for patients with depression is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), together with cognitive behavioral psychotherapy. Lithium carbonate and electroconvulsive therapy are alternatives in especially resistant cases.
