Abstract

In the Aysén region, the impact of human activities has been very recent compared to other regions of Chile and the world. In terms of terrestrial ecosystems, until less than a century ago, the landscape was dominated by extensive temperate forests that had hardly been intervened by indigenous inhabitants (Tehuelches -Aonikenk- in these territories). With colonization at the beginning of the 20th century, the expansion of cattle ranching and nowadays firewood extraction, this landscape has been radically transformed in just a few decades. What is the importance of vascular plants in terrestrial ecosystems? What are deciduous forests like? What singularities do they have in Aysén and what threats to their conservation do they currently face? These are some of the questions we try to answer in this book, to broaden our understanding of the ecological, economic and social importance of the deciduous forests of Aysén.
