Resum

This article deals with the evaluation of the redistributive effects of public policies, discussing their scope and presenting the main instruments, methods and approaches used to measure the distributive changes generated, and their impact on social welfare. Firstly, it sets out the methodological framework which, in line with the foundations of Welfare Economics, provides scientific rigour to the conducted assessments. Secondly, it examines the role of microsimulation in the ex-ante evaluation of public policies, focusing their redistributive effects. Next, the article considers the suitability of incorporating distributional aspects into impact evaluation. Finally, it presents the inclusion of distributive analysis in macroeconomic general equilibrium models.
