Abstract

Invasive alien species (IAS) has a very significant impact on aquatic environments. In Spain theseecosystems are home to a large number of IAS and to a high diversity and endemism of fauna, especiallyinland fish. The threat posed by IAS and the difficulty of working in rivers and streams requires the use ofdifferent tools for their control and possible eradication, as well as the development of new methodologiesfor their application. The methodology for a pilot project was designed to allow the application andassessment of the use of rotenone as an instrument for control and possible eradication of IAS in a riversystem. This methodology, which currently being implemented, has not been previously tested for rivers inSpain. The methodology was designed for its application on Pseudorasbora parva, IAS inhabiting somerivers in the Guadiana Basin, Extremadura. It’s included in the Spanish Catalog of Invasive Exotic Species(legally developed by Royal Decree 630/2013). A typical Mediterranean stream (low flow rate, marked dryseason), where this IAS inhabits, was selected and the methodology was applied once the relevantauthorizations for the use of this biocide were available. It’s considered relevant to present themethodology applied in this pilot project due to the wide possibilities to apply this tool in Spain.
