Abstract

This article analyses the importance of the Central Asian region in Iranian foreign policy and which geopolitical factors have led Tehran to maintain commercial and political relations with the former Soviet republics since 1992. In turn, it evaluates the role of the Caspian Sea and the agreements on the delimitation of its waters in the revival of relations with the Central Asian countries allowing Tehran to plan and develop projects of great impact both for the Persian country and for the region. Finally, the author makes a journey through the most important vectors of bilateral relations of the Islamic Republic of Iran with the five former Soviet republics, highlighting the successes and future challenges for Tehran in the coming years.
