Un furibundo ataque de Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo contra la elección de Félix V (1439) durante el Concilio de Basileaedición crítica y traducción española del Libellus inuectiuus

Abstract

This paper presents the first critical edition and translation into Spanish of Rodrigo Sánchez de Arévalo’s Libellus inuectivus, wherein he vehemently critiques a German monk who had advocated for the election of Amadeus VIII of Savoy as the new pontiff, assuming the name Felix V. The work exhibits an unprecedented intensity, distinct from the author's other writings. Two primary arguments are advanced: firstly, that the aspirations of the assembly in Basel lack integrity towards the Church, and secondly, that a layperson devoid of theological knowledge is unfit to govern the Church. Moreover, the significance of the Libellus lies in Arévalo's explicit acknowledgment of his participation in the council, a fact predominantly omitted in his body of work. Additionally, it marks the first instance in which he draws upon the Latin works of Petrarch as a source.
