Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between eating behaviors and conformity to the feminine gender norms in female ballet students. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) (Garner y Garfinkel, 1979) and the Conformity to the Feminine Norms Inventory (CFNI) (Mahalik, 2005) were administered in a group of 26 ballet students and 27 high school and university students of Madrid. Being a dancer does not increase the risk of developing an Eating Disorder (ED). However, dancers have a slightly lower Body Mass Index (BMI), a lower desire to lose weight and a greater satisfaction with their weight compared with the control group. A positive correlation between femininity and prejudicial eating behavior was found; more specifically, considering important to be thin and romantic in the relationships may be associated with the development of an ED. The importance of exploring the influence of «gender» system in a risk population such as ballet students so as to, from this perspective, analyze which variables protect or put them at risk of an ED, could be a step forward with the aim of improving the health and quality of life of this collective.
