Résumé

Diet and physical exercise are tow of the environment factors that have been shown to trigger epigenetic mechanisms, which are implicated in cognitive functions regulation. In addition, gut microbiota interacts with the brain via the gut-brain axis, and microbe-derived metabolites can act as epigenetic regulators, affecting the central nervous system physiology. In this chapter, the main epigenetic mechanisms are describe, including DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-protein-coding RNAs. Then, some relevant findings regarding the relationships between epigenetic modifications and the gut microbioeta, and between epigenetics and cognitive functions, are summarized. Finally, the mediating role of epigenetics in regulating the interaction between intestinal microbiota and cognitive functions is exposed.
