Resumo

First, a historiographical approximation of Canarian archaeology of the last 50 years is offered, from a double perspective: regional and general developments of modern archaeology. Secondly, a state of the question about the first settlement of the Canary Islands within the context of North Africa is outlined. In addition, the circum-African island population process is summarized within the Terra 4 model of Gamble (2013). A comparative perspective of the initial settlements in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and even the Pacific is included. Thirdly, I highlight the important value of a «comparative island archaeology» in the 21st century. It is a search for the patterns by which islands have shaped human beings and how, in turn, human societies have shaped insular geographies. Finally, the importance of island archaeologies is underlined to achieve a global and long-term archaeological perspective.
