Abstract

During the period 2012-2014 the studies concerning the Perimeter Protection delimitation for the Gruta de las Maravillas cave (Aracena, Huelva) were performed. A combined study of geophysical techniques suggested the presence of new several caves in the vicinity of the cave. Thus, the study indicated the possibility of a large cavity, stretching from the end of the known cave to the eastern area of Cerro del Castillo. In addition to this large cavity, other anomaliesbelonging to other cavities and located near the Castle were identified. The possible existence of cavities in the vicinityof the town largely justified the need to confirm these hypotheses. All this, in conjunction to the scientific interest inthe geological settings knowledge of the environment of the Cave, were performed two boreholes located accordingto various criteria (residual gravity anomalies intensity, lithology and mineralogy, access and location of the historiccastle). One of them detected a cavity with a minimum height of 5 meters. In the present communication we describein detail the aspects related to the development of the drills and discovery of this cavity, in addition to the methodologyused for the images acquisition.
