Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the initiatives taken by García Álvarez de Toledo, 1stDuke of Alba, to promote the ecclesiastical career of his young son Gutierre de Toledo as part of his family strategies. In this way, this paper especially analyses the diplomatic activity of the duke of Alba, and focuses on his mobilization of relational capital to pursue that end. The main source for this research is the duke’s private correspondence, kept in the “Archivo Ducal de Alba”.
