Abstract

One of the most striking pieces in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid is the Office of Ramón Gómez de la Serna. It is a special work which raises questions about what domestic scenographic spaces are, how they are, and what they do in museums linked to the biographies of singular people. They could be thought of as museum houses, but they are different. They are portable works of art and, in fact, they can be installed in all sorts of places, in different ways. In addition, if there were once inhabitants in the museum houses, and for this reason it is more likely to recreate their trace, no one ever lived in this one. The examination of some of the characteristics of Ramón's office in the different houses and museums in which it has been, and is nowadays, allows us to notice that, no matter how much you try to musealise life, there is no way to be in the museum like at home.
