Abstract
This paper suggests an itinerary to rethink the colonial heritage of German expressionism through the analysis of different museographies and curatorial strategies. It begins with a historical revision of the configuration of ethnological collections, followed by a look at presentations of non-Western art that were displayed alongside modern European art, such as the controversial exhibition Primitivism (MoMA, 1984). This paper discusses contemporary curatorial practices that seek to put forward a decolonisation of museums. They reveal the responsibility of European institutions to urgently confront the provenance of their collections, as well as the challenge of avoiding the perpetuation of Eurocentric and racist narratives. Finally, it analyses recent exhibitions in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Berlin that examine expressionist art in relation to the context of colonialism and their concrete strategies for challenging the traditional narrative by including diverse historical perspectives and contemporary voices.
