The iconographic type of the Tree of Jesse, as a visual representation of Christ’s genealogy, refers to both his divine and earthly nature, which allow the fulfillment of the messianic prophecy. Furthermore, it symbolizes the union between the Old and the New Testament, since it presents Christ as the descendant of the kings of the tribes of Israel. At the same time, this represents a link between royalty and religion, two of the main pillars during the Middle Ages, at a moment in which this iconographic type had its greatest development. This article will address questions such as the historiographic problem of its origins, a diachronic reading of its main variants and their link with the political, social and religious context in which they were originally created.
