Abstract

This paper is based on two fundamental premises: the role of children’s and youth literature in enculturation and in transmission of values, and the specialization of literary genres in educational centers to transmit different kinds of knowledge. According to Senís’s studies, poetry usually occupies a secondary place because it is considered that it only fulfills the objective of literary education, but not the one of transmission of values. In this article, eight books of contemporary children’s poetry are analyzed paying attention to the transmission of values, especially those related to gender roles. Based on this analysis, we can affirm that children’s poetrynot only allows literary education bout also presents the values that we want to transmit to our boys and girls, so it should occupy a more prominent place in compulsory education.
