Abstract

Performance of 9 male stutterers with that of 9 male nonstutterers, all adult righthanded, was compared. The task required heard word matching either with written words or with drawings. Visual stimuli were tachistoscopically presented in visual fields (LVF, CVF and RVF). Isolated manual reaction time (RT) and movement time (MT) for diverse matches were measured to assess visual field advantage in linguistic processing and to determine movement differences between stutterers and nonstutterers. The stuttering group showed LVF advantage and his MT was significatively slowler than in normals. Results, showing stutterers having right hemisphere superiority and sensory-motor deficient integration in linguistic processing, suggest a new view in cerebral dominance theory.
