Abstract

Objective: to gain knowledge on the general Spanish population’s perception of the psychological impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and if it is adjusted to the recent empirical evidence. Method: an online survey was designed, in which the estimates of the participants (n = 1117) of the probability of developing psychological problems or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) were collected according to the type of COVID-related event experienced. Results: the different comparisons with normative data show an overestimation of the psychological sequelae in the studied sample, both for the general po-pulation and for healthcare professionals. In addition, it is found that some groups, specifically women, young people (18-25 years) and participants without studies in Health Sciences and who do not work in this professional field, predicted well significant (p < ,05) more mental health problems compared to the other groups. Discussion: it is necessary to convey to the general population, as well as to institu-tions and the media, the importance of disseminating data adjusted to the recent evidence, and thereby promoting the creation of support networks and adequate distribution of resources.
