Abstract

Dalí’s painting Two Figures (1926) has been affected by the transference of a reddish pigment. To minimize the perception of this damage, the technique of virtual photonic restoration is being used. This technique consists of projecting an illumination mask onto the artwork, which allows it to be seen restored in a reversible way. In order to carry out this technique, it is necessary to characterize the spectral reflectance of the pigments that make up the painting. Spectral reflectance acquisition through hyperspectral imaging has become very important in the field of cultural heritage restoration, as it allows the characterization of artworks without contacting them. However, hyperspectral imaging systems typically consist of CCD and CMOS sensors with limited dynamic range, providing images with underexposed or saturated areas. This research describes a hyperspectral imaging system capable of obtaining the high dynamic range spectral reflectance of the red pigment present in Dalí’s painting.
