Abstract

This paper analyses the construction of the image of the heroine Hua Mulan from different perspectives, such as Orientalism and feminism, to reflect on interculturality in American cinema. Drawing from the classic Chinese literary work, The Ballad of Mulan, and after reviewing the evolution of the representation of Chinese women in American cinema, a qualitative study is conducted based on the theory of dramatist péntad. Employing a case study methodology, the similarities, and differences between the literary work and the two film adaptations of Disney's Mulanreleased in 1998 and 2020 are analyzed. The differences located in the audiovisual elements point to a reflection of feminist progress in the two decades separating the two productions. On the other hand, the divergences from the original ballad show how Disney's filmsreflect modern American ideals and values through a heroine from Asian culture, whose image departs from the cultural essence present in theChinese works, and through a staging that depicts a stereotypical view of the East.
