Abstract

This work provides an empirical comparative analysis of basic administration functionalities of Moodle 3.4 and Chamilo 1.11.4. The analysed functionalities are focused on the management of: users, categories and courses, grades, competencies, badges and appearance, as well as a comparison of all the functionalities that an online learning platform could have nowadays. Two local instances of each learning management system have been used to make this research; both have been configured using the same parameters as far as possible. From this study, it is worked out that both environments are similar with intuitive functionalities, but also with differences in personalization and usability. While Moodle is providing a deeper customization and management options for the administrator; Chamilo has a shortest catalogue of customization options, because it is more focused on simplifying its functionalities. Both of them seem to be qualified for being deployed by non-expert users, while offering them the guarantee of being able to focus on the methodological aspects but technical issues.
