Abstract

The pharmacist is the expert clinician in medicines and is involved in all stages of its life, from research and development stages, manufacturing, marketing and sales, distribution, control and legislation, dispensing, giving pharmaceutical advice and pharmacotherapy follow-up (clinical work). Within those fields, Community Pharmacy has been the focus of the exercise of the pharmaceutical profession since its inception and has been modified with the evolution of the profession, the scientific and social progress. During the last 5 years, a number of economic events experienced, mainly highlighting changes in the productive economy, the crisis of international confidence and public debt and the collapse of the Spanish financial system, which have seriously affected the progress of the national economy, have led a severe economic downturn and shooting registered unemployment figures. This economic situation, which is not unique to our country, has affected many public and private companies, both in the problems of state funding cuts that have led to items charged to the State Budget, and the lack of funding business projects by credit institutions. In this economic environment, the pharmaceutical profession has faced a number of challenges that have affected its operation to continue providing quality service to the Spanish society. Considering these aspects, a study of the different social, professional and economic components that characterize the pharmaceutical profession has been made, establishing national data comparatives with our European environment and the closest one, analyzing the situation of the community pharmacy in the Community of Madrid.
