Abstract

The purpose of this research was to analyze the news consumption habits of Generation Z; for this, the theory of uses and gratifications of Katz et al. (1973) y Katz et al. (1974). The general objective of this work was to analyze the habits and consumption practices of social communication students between the ages of 18 and 24, classified as Generation Z. Likewise, it was sought to establish the similarities and differences in news consumption between the social communication students from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The population studied were students of the Faculty of Communication of the University of Puerto Rico, students of the Ferre Rangel School of Communication of the Universidad del Sagrado Corazon, students of the School of Social Communication of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, and students of the Department of Social Communication and Digital Media of the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo. The methodology used was descriptive and cross-sectional, with a mixed methodological approach, that is, quantitative and qualitative. Regarding the quantitative part, a questionnaire (n=175) was administered as an instrument, self-applied through the SurveyMonkey platform. For the qualitative part, two discussion groups were used, namely: the first was with students from two universities in the Dominican Republic (n=7), and the second group was made with students from two universities in Puerto Rico (n=3)...
