Abstract

Psychiatric disorders, affecting one third of the global population and causing high disability, represent one of the most important health care challenges of our days. Despite the usefulness of the existing diagnostic manual, the high heterogeneity and comorbidity that characterizes these disorders, complicates the diagnostic stability and suggests more diffuse biological boundaries. The multifactorial nature of the etiology of these disorders, involving both genetic and environmental factors, as well as their interaction, is responsible for the impairment in neurotransmission and inflammation during brain development. These impairments are shared between several disorders.
